Precision Shapes Light: CNC Machining Becomes a Core Driver for the Upgrade of Outdoor Lighting Industry

       According to reports, high-pole street lamps, and smart outdoor wall lamps, CNC (Computer Numerical Control) precision machining technology is providing core support for the upgrading of the outdoor lighting industry towards intelligence, aesthetics, and durability with millimetric precision and efficient production capacity. As urban construction accelerates and the demand for smart cities rises, outdoor lighting is no longer just a tool for illumination but has become an important part of urban landscape and smart management. This transformation has put forward higher requirements for the structural precision, material durability, and design flexibility of lighting products, making CNC precision machining a key grasp for enterprises to enhance product competitiveness.

      At the recently concluded 19th China International Machine Tool Show (CIMT2025), innovative achievements of CNC machining focusing on outdoor lighting application scenarios were prominently displayed, attracting widespread attention from the industry. Wuhan Huazhong Numerical Control, targeting the processing needs of outdoor lighting components, launched the new-generation intelligent CNC system "Huazhong Type 10 - Outdoor Lighting Special Edition". Through the in-depth adaptation of AI chips and outdoor lighting component processing technology models, it realizes the automatic optimization of processing parameters for core components such as lamp housings, heat dissipation fins, and light pole connecting parts. On-site demonstrations showed that the system can independently adjust cutting speed and feed rate according to the processing characteristics of different materials (aluminum alloy, stainless steel, engineering plastics), control the processing precision error within ±0.001mm, and increase production efficiency by more than 25% at the same time. Workers can call and debug the processing program through voice commands, greatly reducing the operation threshold and ensuring the consistency of batch production.

     The upgrading of flexible manufacturing capabilities has further enabled CNC machining to accurately match the diversified and customized production needs of the outdoor lighting industry. At the exhibition site, Ningbo Weili Robot displayed a digital flexible manufacturing production line for outdoor lighting components. Through the collaborative linkage between CNC machine tools and industrial robots, it realizes the full-process automation from blank loading, processing, surface treatment auxil iary processing to finished product unloading. The production line can flexibly switch the processing of 15 types of core outdoor lighting components such as landscape lamp casings, high-pole lamp flanges, and smart sensor mounting bases, reducing the changeover time from the traditional 3.5 hours to 25 minutes, effectively solving the pain point of "small-batch and multi-variety production" for lighting enterprises. The outdoor lighting-specific flexible production control system launched by Liding Intelligent Equipment can also collect real-time data such as temperature and vibration during the processing process, predict equipment failures through big data analysis, and increase the production line utilization rate to more than 96%.


    On the actual production side, CNC precision machining has become a "standard technology" for the manufacturing of high-end outdoor lighting products. In Opple's Zhejiang Outdoor Lighting Production Base, five-axis CNC machining centers are operating at high speed to complete the integrated processing of aluminum alloy casings for smart landscape lamps. Through the synchronous movement of multiple degrees of freedom, the machining center completes complex processes such as curved surface shaping, hollow carving, and hole position drilling of the lamp casing in one go. It not only realizes the personalized design of the lamp casing that conforms to the urban landscape style, but also improves the structural strength of the casing, making it resistant to wind and rain erosion. In the production base of Philips Lighting in Jiangsu, customized CNC machine tools perform precision machining on the heat dissipation fins of high-power street lamps. Through high-precision cutting, the flatness error of the fins is controlled within 0.002mm, which maximizes the heat dissipation efficiency of the street lamps and extends their service life by more than 30%. In addition, in the field of smart outdoor lighting, CNC machining technology realizes the high-precision forming of sensor mounting grooves and wire troughs inside the lamp body, ensuring the stable operation of smart control components.

   The effective implementation of technology is inseparable from the in-depth cultivation and dedication of craftsmen. Zhang Jun, the "CNC Precision Master" from Suzhou Panasonic Manufacturing Technology Co., Ltd., has been deeply engaged in the field of CNC machining of outdoor lighting components for 18 years. Aiming at the problem of easy deformation and poor surface smoothness in the processing of thin-walled aluminum alloy lamp casings for outdoor use, he developed the "low-speed precision cutting + multi-point balanced clamping" processing technology by optimizing the processing path and innovating the clamping method. This technology has increased the processing yield rate of thin-walled lamp casings from 82% to 99.5%, improved the surface finish of the products, and reduced the subsequent surface treatment costs by 12%. It has been adopted by many well-known lighting enterprises at home and abroad. His practice confirms the industry consensus that "high-end outdoor lighting relies not only on innovative design, but also on precision machining", and provides valuable experience for the in-depth application of CNC technology in the outdoor lighting field.

   Industry data shows that the market demand for CNC machine tools in China's outdoor lighting manufacturing field continues to rise. In 2024, the market scale reached 38.6 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.1%, of which the demand for CNC machining equipment related to smart outdoor lighting accounted for more than 65%. At the policy level, the support of ultra-long-term national bonds for the R&D of intelligent manufacturing equipment for urban construction supporting products, as well as the continuous advancement of smart city construction plans, have injected strong impetus into the innovative application of CNC machining technology in the outdoor lighting field. Yu Fenghui, a senior researcher at the Pangoal Institution, said that CNC precision machining is a core supporting technology for the upgrading of the outdoor lighting industry towards intelligence and aesthetics. Its technological breakthrough can not only enhance the core competitiveness of China's outdoor lighting manufacturing industry, but also has important practical significance for promoting the high-quality development of urban construction and smart city construction.

   From technological innovation at exhibitions to mass application in workshops, from the iterative upgrading of intelligent systems to the technological breakthroughs of craftsmen, CNC precision machining is deeply integrating into the entire chain of outdoor lighting manufacturing. In the future, with the further integration of 5G, Internet of Things and CNC machining technology, more intelligent and personalized processing solutions for outdoor lighting will be spawned, laying a solid manufacturing foundation for the high-quality development of China's outdoor lighting industry and the construction of smart cities.
